Ambra is a restaurant interior organized around a balance of conviviality and privacy. My approach brings the dining room, bar and more secluded seating into one coherent material and lighting scheme.
The design approach
Walnut joinery anchors the room, while pale travertine and lime-plaster surfaces keep the atmosphere light. Banquettes soften the edges of the dining space, the bar becomes a natural meeting point, and carefully placed lighting gives each table its own sense of intimacy.
Three design decisions
- 01
Create different ways to gather
Small tables, banquettes and a quieter dining alcove provide different levels of intimacy within the same restaurant.
- 02
Build a tactile material palette
Travertine, walnut, leather and plaster give the interior warmth through texture and proportion.
- 03
Let light shape the evening
Daylight from the courtyard is balanced with low, warm lighting at tables, joinery and the bar.
